Why this started, and where it's going
The Problem
As AI tools became part of everyday life for students, it became clear that most young people were being taught to use these systems — but almost never taught to question them, or to notice when they don't work equally well for everyone.
The Research
Independent research into AI bias among young people confirmed the gap: students had opinions about AI, but rarely the vocabulary or framework to explain why a system might be unfair, or to whom.
Where We're Going
Youth AI Literacy Pathways was founded to turn that research into workshops, discussion guides, and partnerships — starting small, and growing with every student and educator who gets involved.
Sarah Higashio Gocsei is a multilingual high school student with a strong interest in AI literacy, behavioral economics, and information bias. Growing up in a global and multicultural environment, she became interested in these fields after observing how differences in the information people encounter can shape their perspectives and decisions.
She has published a research paper on AI-driven information inequality, worked as a research intern, presented her findings at the Japan Behaviormetric Society, and been selected as a TEDx Youth speaker. Through these experiences, she became increasingly aware that many young people do not have equal access to the knowledge and critical-thinking skills needed to use AI responsibly — which led her to start Youth AI Literacy Pathways (YALPath), an initiative that aims to help young people from diverse backgrounds better understand AI, think critically about misinformation and bias, and engage with emerging technologies responsibly.
